Potter Marsh

A great blue heron has been spotted at Potter Marsh during the past week, fishing in the sloughs and walking on the logs in the water. Although its northern range includes some parts of Prince William Sound and Kachemak Bay, Anchorage is uncommon grounds for it.

Potter Marsh teems with wildlife and shows many moods through the four seasons.

Whales

In this Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 photo, boaters and fishermen near Ketchikan, Alaska, watch as a group of up to six humpback whales gorged on herring, repeatedly breaking the surface together, then swimming around, showing flukes and backs, blowing and sometimes making loud shrieking and groaning noises before diving, only to surface again minutes later. Seagulls feeding on herring driven to the surface by the whales let boaters know where the whales would surface next.

Images of various sightings from Juneau to Barrow and in between.

Belgua found

A lactating female beluga whale stranded just off of Elderberry Park 200 yards from downtown Anchorage on Friday October 9, 2009. Biologists later performed a necropsy on the dead whale.
