2010 Census begins in Noorvik

World War II veteran Clifton Jackson, 89, sits at his kitchen table in the remote Inupiat Eskimo village of Noorvik, Alaska., Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010. Jackson is to become the first American counted in the 2010 Census when he is counted by the U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves on Monday in Noorvik.

The 2010 U.S. Census officially begins in Noorvik, Alaska on Monday, January 25. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves will be in the remote village to count the first household. Noorvik residents are planning a huge reception of traditional dancing and a feast of caribou, moose and other subsistence foods.

Richard Foster represented Nome in the state House for 21 years. He was one of the longest serving legislators. He died in Seattle on October 13 while undergoing dialysis.

Bethel booze

Responding to a call at a Bethel steam house, police officer Jerry Herrod arrives to defuse an argument between people he said had been drinking - a common situation, he says.

Bethel, a city of 5,700 people is the biggest of 19 so-called "damp" communities in Alaska.

Cruisin' the Fossil Freeway

Ketchikan artist Ray Troll has 20 paintings and five murals on display at the "Cruisin' the Fossil Freeway" exhibit in Seattle. Shells, skulls, bones, impressions and other fossils make up the collection, and are part of a book, also titled, "Cruisin' the Fossil Freeway," written by paleontologist Kirk Johnson and illustrated by Troll.
