A fishing vessel that plowed its way through several hundred yards of ice on its way to a boat launch on Kodiak Island cracked its hull and began taking on water, according to the Coast Guard.
The 55-foot My Oar radioed for help from Anton Larsen Bay Wednesday afternoon, but communication with the ship was lost shortly after and the Coast Guard deployed a Jayhawk helicopter to the scene.
The chopper found the vessel taking on water near the boat launch in the bay, after having broken through the ice to reach the launch, according to the Coast Guard.
The vessel was pumped and tied to the shore as the tide receded, and it remains aground. Officials hope to complete repairs to the vessel and refloat it this afternoon, the Coast Guard said.
No injuries were recorded, and there were no reported spills. An investigation is continuing.
