Three more finish Quest

Back-of-the pack mushers Jamie Nelson, Braden Bennett and Bruno Baureis finished the the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest on Saturday, three days after champion Hans Gatt. Nelson was the first to finish Saturday, arriving at 4:19 a.m. to place 20th.

Four mushers remain on the trial as of Saturday afternoon. They are expected to finish by Saturday night or early today.

Seavey surges into Yentna

Defending champion Tyrell Seavey led a tight group of three mushers into the halfway point at Yentna Station on Saturday in the first day of the Junior Iditarod sled dog race.

Seward's Seavey, 17, arrived in Yentna at 4:43 p.m., just four minutes ahead of Denali Park's Cali King, 17. Willow's Max Kornmuller arrived at 4:52 p.m.

The 160-mile event ends today with mushers leaving Yentna in the early hours heading toward the finish line in at Settler's Bay Golf Course in Wasilla.

All but two of the race's 19 mushers had arrived in Yentna by 9 p.m. Saturday.

Wright on in Chugiak

Kelly Wright led her team to victory on the first day of Junior Eagle River Classic at the Beach Lake Trails.

Wright finished first in the 7-dog class, cruising over the 8-mile trail in 28 minutes and 18 seconds. Nathan Sterling was second at 29:52.

The two-day event wraps up today, starting at 10:30 a.m. There are five classes in the race.

Sonya Cavens took control in the 5-dog class, building a 27-second lead over Britni Shampang.
