Top mushers often get financial help from corporate sponsors, but most are left to use savings or borrow money against the odds of winning a stake in the purse. Prize money is distributed among the top 30 finishers, with the winner taking home $68,571 and a new diesel pickup truck. The first musher to the halfway point also wins $3,000 in gold nuggets. Thirtieth place pays $1,429 -- less than the Iditarod entry fee of $1,850. About half the field earns just valuable experience and the pride of competing in the Last Great Race.
