Kott's lawyer, Jim Wendt, asked U.S. District Judge John Sedwick for written permission for him to make the trips. This week, the judge said OK.
If all went as planned, the first trip -- to Las Vegas -- started Tuesday and ends today. Kott wanted to use an old airline ticket that was about to expire, and he wanted to get away, Wendt said in the request.
"Mr. Kott and his family have been subjected to a number of antagonistic incidents since his conviction and this trip is simply to take two days away from this environment prior to sentencing," Wendt wrote in his motion.
The lawyer didn't go into much detail, but did include a footnote that said the incidents included "vandalism to his vehicles."
The second trip is over Thanksgiving to visit the family of his significant other, Debra Stovern, in Mesquite, Nev. She came to Kott's trial and testified on his behalf.
Kott's sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 7. Prosecutors say he likely faces several years in prison.
