PALMER - Sandra White, a Matanuska-Susitna Borough School Board member, resigned Wednesday. White beat incumbent Dan Contini in October to claim seat G on the seven-member board headed by president Sarah Welton. All members serve at-large.

In a school district press release Thursday, White said an unexpected family crisis prompted her to step down. A Talkeetna resident and Su Valley Junior/Senior High School graduate, White was the only borough resident on the School Board who lives outside the core area.

White, who said she was boarding a plane last night for Paris for a two-week vacation, declined to answer questions Wednesday at the School Board meeting.

"Serving on the Mat-Su School Board has been fascinating and enriching," White said in the release.

The school board has 30 days to select a replacement.

Applications must include a letter outlining the applicant's ability to meet the legal requirements to serve, a statement of interest and a resume. Candidates will be interviewed and selected in a special school board meeting at 6 p.m. April 30 at Palmer High School, 1170 W. Arctic Ave.

The newly appointed board member will be sworn in May 7 and hold office until the October election for board members.
