Zippy Dunbar races to 3 wins at Big C Relays

TURNING HEADS: It's early, but track and field athletes have set the bar very high.

Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar sizzled on the track Saturday inside The Dome.

Competing in the inaugural Big C Relays, the junior ran to victory three times in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Dunbar's eye-popping 3,200 time of 9 minutes, 11.9 seconds was especially strong considering it would have crushed his state record of 9:25.26 set last year.

State records can only be set at the state championship meet, but Dunbar's time is a good indicator of just how fast he's running, especially this early in the season.

Saturday's 3,200 race was one of the fastest, with runner-up Jake Parisien clocking an impressive 9:19.44.

Dunbar, the two-time Alaska Class 4A state cross-country running champion, won the 800 in 2:00.15 and the 1,600 in 4:17.92.

But he wasn't the only athlete turning heads Saturday.

Bartlett's Jordan Clarke won the shot put with a Herculean heave of 65 feet, 6 1/2 inches, which would have easily broken his state record of 60-1 set last year.

Clarke also won the discus (170-10 1/2) by more than 25 feet, proving why he ranks as one of the nation's top high school throwers.

Other double winners included East's Ceylon Mitchell, who swept the 110 and 300 hurdles, and Service's Ben Jackson, who won the high jump and long jump.

The two-day event hosted by Grace Christian and Anchorage Christian schools featured some 24 schools and 700 athletes.

On the girls side, Anchorage Christian's Nychele Fischetti won the 800 and 3,200 in impressive fashion. She won the 800 by nearly five seconds and the 3,200 by a whopping 22 seconds.

Other double winners included Dimond's Lauren Laichak, who was first in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Soldotna's Paige Blackburn, who swept the shot put and discus.
