What's up with Eagle River High yearbooks?
While the rest of you freshly relinquished high school students get to lazily sift through your shiny new yearbooks, we at Eagle River High School must hold out until the fall. Apparently the detainment of our ever-anticipated yearbook is so that the spring sports will be recognized within its pages. That doesn't sound convincing enough. I believe it is really a conniving ploy just to get us to come back next year. The school withholds our yearbooks, forcing us to register again in the fall -- much to the chagrin of the graduated seniors. The school also has found a way to make money off of this scandal. Inevitably, I assure you, one-third of the students who paid for a yearbook will have forgotten by the end of the summer and never stop by to pick it up. How has ERHS tried to remedy the situation? In an attempt to sustain us through the summer, the office hands out "autograph booklets." These demoralizing packets of stapled paper are meant to be signed by friends and then taped into the yearbook, if you receive one. This has caused all our notes to have a more sullen tone, morphing from "Have a great summer ..." to "I'd write this in your yearbook but ..."

Indie music for girls
In a music industry littered with synthesized boy bands influenced solely by MTV, it is refreshing to hear the more creative, obscure artists. Even more novel is a good female indie band, so embrace the androgynous voices and feminist values of all those underground indie chicks. Here is a playlist for those weary of our culture's VH1-induced obsessions and looking for something obscure that doesn't reduce girls to merely curvaceous objects.

The Seward SeaLife Center hosts the Alaska Seabird Celebration on Saturday and Sunday. It includes lectures, nature walks, birding boat trips and other activities to learn about International Polar Year, a 60-nation scientific program focusing on arctic birds. Send visitors to the zoo
If you plan on having summer visitors, especially ones with kids, check out the daily Alaska Zoo tour. It takes you behind the scenes to look at natural history, zoo stories and an up-close look at the polar bears. The tour is noon to 2 p.m. Adults are $20, and kids are $10.
