Despite waiting on a handful of players to arrive from the college ranks, the Pilots, who beat the Bears 5-0 on Tuesday, used a mixed-bag line up of players and assistant coaches to pull out a come-from-behind victory.
After falling behind 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Anchorage scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to help secure the win.
To start the decisive rally, Bryan Haar, who just graduated from Grossmont High School in San Diego, walked and stole second. Catcher Alex Kurland then doubled, and Harr got waved in by the Pilots third base coach and beat the throw to the plate.
After two Pilots flew out, former East standout Joey Scott, who plays college ball at Eckerd College (Fla.), followed with a double to left field that plated Kurland.
Two batters later, Joe Scott -- not Joey -- doubled to drive in West High grad Eric Zimmermann, who had pinch run for Joey Scott, and Matt Harughty, who had walked and stole second.
To close the scoring, assistant coach Jason Clark singled to drive in Joe Scott. The Pilots got on the board first in the bottom of the third. Designated hitter Ryan Skillern hit a line drive to center that nearly left the park but the South High product settled for a stand-up double.
Skillern advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from catcher Nano Jacobsen, a Juneau grad, and scored on a bunt from Harughty.
Lefty Tyler Whitney picked up the win, and right-hander Tyler Henry was solid in four innings of relief.
Whitney, a Mississippi State pitcher, had a one-hitter through five before giving up two singles to open the sixth. He walked none and struck out five while giving up one run.
Henry, a Kentucky Wildcat, showed good control with one strikeout and one walk.
Since today is Friday the 13th, the Pilots host the San Francisco Seals on "Halloween in June" night at Mulcahy. Those wearing a costume will get in free. The first pitch is set for 7 p.m.
Oilers 3, Seals 0
Three Peninsula Oilers pitchers combined on a no-hitter Thursday night, handcuffing the visiting San Francisco Seals for a 3-0 victory and a three-game sweep of the season-opening nonleague series in Kenai.
Brandon Dixon, Joe Gardner and Erik Draxton combined on the gem at Coral Seymour Memorial Ballpark.
Dixon, a left-hander who led Orange Coast College (Calif.) in wins (10), innings pitched (111 1/3) and strikeouts (77) while compiling a 3.23 earned-run average, cruised through the first four innings. He struck out three and walked two.
Gardner, a right-hander, followed with three hitless innings. He walked one batter. Right-hander Draxton came on to open the eighth and escaped a one-out threat to the Oilers' 1-0 lead.
San Francisco's Nick Navaro reached on an error with one out, stole second base and advanced to third on a passed ball. But Draxton induced a groundout to a drawn-in infield to hold Navaro at third base and struck out Andrew Laws to end the inning.
The Oilers plated the only run they needed in the second inning, when Anthony Aliotti, fresh off driving in four runs in Wednesday night's 17-7 win over the Seals, singled home P.J. Sequeira.
Peninsula added two runs in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Garry Kuykendall and Vince Belnome's RBI groundout.
The Oilers open a three-game home series tonight against the SoCal Running Bears. That's their second opponent in a stretch of nine non-league home games in nine days to start the season.
