Only a handful of people, most opposed to the program, stepped forward to comment on whether a decision last year killing the emissions testing program should be reversed. The Assembly expects to have a proposed ordinance on the table next month that would continue the program after the end of 2009.
Two approaches for extending the program have been discussed recently. One would exempt new vehicles from emissions inspections for six years instead of the current four; the other would exempt new vehicles for eight years.
The two approaches also would treat old vehicles differently: one exempts vehicles 25 years or older; the other does not.
A third proposed ordinance has been accompanying the other two packages, though it doesn't deal with vehicle emissions. Proposed by Assemblywomen Sheila Selkregg and Harriet Drummond, the measure would create safety and muffler noise tests that vehicles would have to pass.
