Cordova snowstorm

Cordova residents are tunneling out after several snow storms moved through Prince William Sound.

January Valdez snowstorm

Heavy snow pounded Valdez and Cordova on January 6, 2012, after the town received 19.2 inches Thursday from the Prince William Sound blizzard, making for a season total of more than 20 feet. Meanwhile, Nome is having its worst cold spell since 1989.

2012 Healthy Futures Challenge

Mao Tosi spins daughter Maori, 7, while explaining how he and his kids play at home during the spring kickoff for the statewide Healthy Futures Challenge Tuesday morning Feb. 7, 2012 at Susitna Elementary School in Anchorage. Maori is a first grader at the school. The state is now partnering with the Healthy Futures organization in promoting the Play Every Day campaign, encouraging youngsters to play and be physically active every day. From February through April kids in participating schools may log their physical activity when they spend at least 30 minutes outside of school being active. If they record three play sessions per week over four weeks, they receive monthly prizes. So far 124 schools statewide and 16,000 students are signed on for the spring Healthy Futures Challenge. The program is sponsored by the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame, the Alaska Dept. of Health and Social Services and Providence Health and Services Alaska.

The spring kickoff for the statewide Healthy Futures Challenge was held Tuesday morning Feb. 7, 2012 at Susitna Elementary School in Anchorage.

Ice fishing

Christian Welch of Orion Elementary School gets a close look in his hole. About 1,400 Anchorage School District students will take part in an ice fishing event at Jewel Lake hosted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Jay Baumer, educator and biologist for ADF&G, says students will be fishing for char, rainbow trout and landlocked salmon throughout the week.

Alaska Ski for Women

About 1,200 women participated on the 16th annual Alaska Ski for Women at Kincaid Park on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012.  The event helps raise money to fight domestic violence.  Skiers competed in freestyle and classic events and their costumes were judged during a party wave that paraded through the stadium.
