The move IFL president Chad Dittman compared to what "the merger of the NFL and AFL did for professional football in the 1960s," will also change the league's name.
An official unveiling of the league's new name, logo and Web site is scheduled to be announced Aug. 1.
"Today is one of the best days, if not the best, for indoor football," Dittman said in a press release. "It can and will lead to bigger and better things."
Team owners of the new league will meet in September, Dittman said, in Omaha, Neb., where they will change rules and align the nine IFL teams and eight UFL teams into new conferences and divisions.
