Mary Hausler was treated and released from Bartlett Regional Hospital the day of the incident.
Hausler was with a deer hunter near Stink Creek on Admiralty Island when she encountered the bear in a thick berry patch around 6 a.m., troopers said.
She was walking ahead of her partner when she heard huffing. She yelled at the bear, but it kept coming toward her. She was not armed. When it was about 10 yards away, she went into a fetal position.
The bear bit her ribs and left leg before Hausler's partner, who was not identified by troopers, was able to get to her and shoot the bear at close range with his 7 mm rifle. The bear retreated. Troopers do not know if it was struck.
Hausler was able to walk to a nearby skiff. At the hospital, she received six stitches to her torso and six stitches to her leg.
