Put this one down in the Cook Inlet Conference football history book.A matchup Saturday night that was heavily favored for third-ranked Bartlett took a wicked spin when a behemoth of a halfback from West High stunned the Golden Bears in one of the conference's wildest season-openers of all-time.Josh Kaiwi, a 6-foot-3, 260-pound senior playing his first season in the backfield, scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime as the Eagles upset the Golden Bears 18-12 before a crazy-loud crowd at Anchorage Football Stadium."This is a brand-new start, a brand-new season," said Kaiwi, whose scoring spree helped the Eagles claw back from a 12-0 deficit.Kaiwi said nobody expected the Eagles (1-0) to come out strong -- especially the favored Golden Bears. And who could blame them? West finished seventh in the CIC last season and hadn't placed in the top-half of the conference since 2003. Plus it hadn't beaten Bartlett since 2004.But Kaiwi and Co. believed they could prove the naysayers wrong."They expected us to come out lazy and out of shape," Kaiwi said. "But we handed it to them. We came out 100 percent."His 8-yard touchdown blast up the middle in overtime sealed the victory and gave West hope that its program could turn things around from back-to-back losing seasons.Kaiwi finished with a game-high 103 rushing yards on 22 carries, scored three touchdowns -- all after halftime -- and credited his offensive line for helping him bring West back from presumed death."I love that kid!" screamed West quarterback Niko Sila, holding back tears. "But it wasn't just about him."It was the team, baby! It was the team!"Bartlett jumped out to a 12-0 lead on two huge running plays. Cyrus Chenault dashed 81 yards into the end zone in the first quarter, and Jamal Hale sprinted 55 yards for a score in the second quarter.Prior to Hale's touchdown, three penalties had negated would-be touchdowns, crushing Bartlett's (0-1) chances to run away with the game. Hale's 79-yard touchdown run was called back. Then quarterback LaMichael Fernandez's 68-yard pass to Jordan Blount and 63-yard touchdown heave to Raymond Reid were each wiped off.The Eagles took advantage of the 145 total penalty yards Bartlett accumulated. With West trailing 12-0 early in the third quarter Kaiwi scampered 4 yards for the touchdown to end a 13-play, 74-yard drive. Then the Eagles defense got hot.West stopped Bartlett on fourth-and-2 on the Eagles' 22-yard-line, forced the Golden Bears to punt on their next drive, then manufactured another beautiful drive midway through the fourth quarter.Kaiwi put the finishing touch on a 14-play, 88-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge to tie the score 12-12 with 4:13 left.In overtime, West won the coin toss and chose to play defense first. It turned out to be a wise decision.Chenault gained five yards on the first play, and Hale had two carries of 0 and 3 yards to put Bartlett at fourth-and-goal on the 2-yard-line.Fernandez scrambled and was met by Kaiwi, who welcomed the first-year quarterback into the conference with a huge sack. The rest was history when Kaiwi found an open hole on second-and-goal thanks to a key block in traffic from teammate JD Richardson."It doesn't matter about how much talent you got," Sila said. "It's about the heart."Kaiwi said he's played seven different positions during his varsity career. But playing halfback this season? It was an unexpected switch."I never moved before," he said. "I didn't expect this one."
