VISUAL ARTS

Campus gallery roundup

Several photographs in "re-pair" by Asia Freeman and Michael Walsh appear prosaic from afar and utterly dynamic up close. The photo "Suspension" creates depth only when seen intimately, and the show is definitely intimate.

See this small show of 10 giclee photos at the Arc Gallery in the UAA/APU Consortium Library until Oct. 14.

Other campus shows include prints, paintings and drawings by Scott Hansen in the Grant Hall gallery at Alaska Pacific University and a show of solo work by Karla Moss Freeman, "Icons," in the Carr-Gottstein Building gallery next door. Both shows continue through the month.

MUSIC

Peabo Bryson with the Norman Connors Band

Two-time Grammy-winning singer Peabo Bryson will perform with the Norman Connors Band on Saturday in a Mayor's Diversity Concert suitable for all ages.

The soul and R&B singer from South Carolina gained fame with his soft-rock ballads and duets with female singers including Roberta Flack and Melissa Manchester. He won a Grammy in 1992 for his performance of "Beauty and the Beast" with Celine Dion and again in 1993 for his duet with Regina Belle, "A Whole New World," the theme song for "Aladdin."

His solo hits include "Feel the Fire" and "I'm So Into You" in 1978 and his 1991 hit "Can You Stop the Rain." He also performs in opera and theater pieces.

Opening act the Norman Connors Band will play R&B and jazz, with its namesake on drums, then back Bryson in his set. Show time is 8 p.m. Saturday in Atwood Concert Hall.

Tickets are $25 to $45, and babies on laps are free (centertix.net, 263-2787). The show runs 2 1/2 hours, including an intermission.

THEATER

The Clean House

A 1996 New York Times review of "The Clean House" raved about playwright Sarah Ruhl's "alchemical imagination" as she took a "strange grab bag of ideas and images, together with some more exotic ingredients," and turned them into one of the best plays of the year.

The script by Ruhl, a MacArthur Foundation fellow and Pulitzer finalist, has finally made its way north for shows at 7 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, tonight through Oct. 12, at Cyrano's Off Center Playhouse, 413 D St. Tickets are $16 general admission, $13.75 for students, seniors and military members (www.centertix.net, 263-2787).
