adn.com upgrading story commenting system

A reminder: if you're still encountering problems with Disqus not recognizing your adn.com account when you try to post - ie: forcing you to log in using Facebook or Twitter, or saying your password isn't correct even though you're already logged in - you can clear your cookies, close your browser and re-login to adn.com and that particular error will be rectified. The recent issues are not related to that long-standing, yet correctable problem.

NOVEMBER 22, 2010

We're two months into the upgrade on our story comments technology "Disqus," and at 10:00 a.m. AKST, Nov. 24, we will move the final part of our site - our blogs - onto the solution. While the volume of comments has increased dramatically since the upgrade, we're still receiving e-mails from some who are having issues.

One of the most comment issues users are encountering is when they are logged into adn.com they find they are unable to post a comment under that adn.com identity, and "Disqus" is forcing them to post under an account using Disqus, Facebook or Twitter. While those options do exist, if you are a currently registered adn.com user, you absolutely can post under that account only.

The steps to set your account to post are as follow:

1) Clear the cookies in your browser
2) Close your browser
3) Open your browser and re-log into your adn.com account

At that point you should be able to post a comment using only your adn.com. One note: If more than one person is using your computer, creating the need for multiple accounts on adn.com, to ensure the cookies do not get crossed, we recommend each account holder use a different browser. For example, Account A uses "Internet Explorer," Account B uses "Firefox."

We've attempted to answer each of your e-mails, however if you are still unable to comment, please continue to reach out to content@adn.com and tell us your problem with as much detail as possible.

Thank you for your patience and feedback,

Scott Levin, Online Editor, adn.com

SEPTEMBER 24, 2010

As part of our ongoing effort to improve our features on adn.com, we will be replacing the current commenting software ("Pluck") to a new service from the vendor "Disqus."

The replacement will begin Friday at 6 a.m., and will be implemented only on stories posted after that time.

Facts to be aware of:

1) There will now be "threaded replies," which will allow individuals to reply to specific comments.

Currently the only way to reply to someone's post is to copy their comment, make a new post and paste in their note. Now replies will post directly beneath the original comment.

2) The functionality for flagging offensive comments and recommending good comments will exist as before. If you want a comment brought to a moderator's attention for review, click the "Flag" button in the lower-left.

3) In addition to posting from your adn.com account, you can now comment using your Facebook or Twitter account.

4) You will have the option of subscribing by email to a comment thread by clicking the “Subscribe by email” button at the bottom of the comment box. New comments will be sent directly to your email inbox, where you may read and respond by email.

If you are logged in using your Facebook account, you will be able to share your comments on specific articles to your Facebook profile page, by clicking the Share on Facebook link directly beneath the comment box.

This is a per-post selection, so each time you comment on an article or reply to another comment, you will need to indicate your interest in sharing the post to Facebook.

5) You will be able to subscribe via RSS to a comment thread by clicking the “Subscribe by RSS” button at the bottom of the comment box. This link will include step-by-step instructions on how to set up the RSS subscription.

ATTACHING AN ICON/AVATAR TO YOUR ADN.COM ACCOUNT:

- You will not have to re-register or create a new account on adn.com to comment on the new system. Your account will remain active. However, if you want to keep your avatar (the icon attached to your comment) you will have to upload a new avatar to your new account using the service Gravatar.

Gravatar is a web site that allows you to attach an avatar to any account on the Internet based on the e-mail address you use for accounts.

For example, if you have signed on to adn.com with the e-mail "user@yahoo.com," register that e-mail with Gravatar, upload your icon to that Gravatar account, and you will then have the icon show up next to your posts on adn.com. With the exception of your e-mail address (and a password), you do not have provide Gravatar with any other personal information.

- You will no longer have a personalized profile page. Disqus does not offer this feature.

If you have questions or run into issues, please e-mail content@adn.com and we will address your concerns as quickly as possible.
