Learning to ice-skate in Anchorage is no challenge. There are plenty of options for taking beginning group lessons. At Ben Boeke Ice Arena next to the Sullivan Arena, skate classes are offered Saturday mornings through the Ice Skating Institute. The next session begins Oct. 28. The Anchorage Figure Skating Club offers Skate With Us lessons at the Wells Fargo sports complex at UAA. The new session starts Oct. 26. Classes are Sunday mornings. Visit www.anchoragefsc.org/skate_with_us.html for more information.

The US Figure Skating Basic Skills Program is operated through the Alaska Association of Figure Skaters. Lessons are Thursdays or Saturdays. To get more information, visit the Dimond Center Chalet located inside Dimond Center or call 344-2237.

All programs offer lessons for tots through adults; it's never too late to learn to skate. Skating lessons are a great way to get out and learn something new. While challenging at first, figure skating soon becomes a lot of fun. I started skating through lessons at the Dimond Center seven years ago. I am still skating, and I'm now a volunteer at the program. Don't be afraid to try it. I promise, you'll fall in love with it.
