Mankato bests Seawolves

UAA's penchant for penalties pierced it Friday night, when No. 13-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato struck for three power-play goals to earn a 5-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win at Sullivan Arena.The Mavericks, who entered having scored five power-play goals on 45 chances in their six previous games, went 3 for 9 with the man advantage.

The Seawolves have given opponents an average of eight power plays per game.

UAA charged out to a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Tommy Grant, who bagged his team-leading seventh, and Paul Crowder, who scored the first of his two goals on the evening.

But Mankato rallied back with three consecutive goals -- by Kurt Davis on the power play, Kael Mouillierat on the power play and Trevor Bruess while the teams skated 4-on-4 and -- to take a 3-2 lead in the second period. The Seawolves used Crowder's second goal to forge a 3-3 tie heading into the second intermission.

Mankato's Andrew Sackrison scored on a power play eight minutes into the third period to notch the game-winner. Bruess added an empty-net goal with 73 seconds left.

UAA fell to 5-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the WCHA. Mankato improved to 4-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league.

The teams close the two-game series tonight at Sullivan at 7:07.
