But I want to tell you about a different musical event, maybe a more intimate one but as magnificent as "big stage" performances. It was a beautiful evening of Russian vocal music of the 19th and 20th centuries that took place Nov. 1 at the Steinway Gallery downtown. The performers were opera singer Anton Belov, who sings a leading part of Escamilio in the current "Carmen," and Svetlana Velichko, well-known piano instructor in Alaska and the president of the Russian Alaskan Academy of Music and Fine Arts.
Belov is the winner of several prestigious vocal competitions here in America and in Europe. His musical talent is magical. Once you hear, you will never forget Anton's big and beautiful voice with deep, rich tone. His masterful and emotional interpretation and sense of style create a perfect musical experience.
Velichko played several preludes by Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. Her performance was as beautiful and inspiring as always. Only 85 lucky people received tickets that evening. I hope that if Svetlana and Anton get together for another recital they will decide to have it at the Atwood Concert Hall.
