A Fort Wainwright officer has died in Iraq from injuries sustained from a non-combat incident, the Defense Department said.

First Lt. William K. Jernigan, 35, of Doraville, Ga., died Monday in Baqubah. He was assigned to Headquarters Company, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, the Defense Department said.
