Guadalupe and Oscar Hernandez
Oscar Hernandez and Lupe Jimenez were married in Choulula, Mexico, where they met when Oscar moved there from Mexico City. The Anchorage couple plan to celebrate their 50th anniversary with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchild in Phoenix.
Shortly after getting married, Oscar and Lupe moved to Chicago. They lived there until 1963, when they briefly moved back to Mexico. In late 1964, they moved to Alaska.
Oscar was a waiter and bartender in hotels until he started working as a cook on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline in 1974. In 1978, he opened Oscar's Taco Grande, a small food wagon, at Third Avenue and Post Road. He still works there with his sons, Salomon and Adàn.
In 2004, Lupe retired from the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel, where she was supervisor of housekeeping for many years.
The Hernandezes have four children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Their children are Salomon Hernandez, Dalila Williams, Hortencia Harmon and Adàn Hernandez. Their grandchildren are Alicia and Anthony Hernandez, Angela Le Londe and Jeramy Williams, Kali, Cody and Tatum Harmon; and their great-grandchild is Nolan Le Londe.
"Oscar and Lupe have shared many adventures, ups, downs, sideways and byways," Adàn wrote. "They look forward to more great times." Oscar jokingly seeks advice from people regarding retirement plans, the family noted.
