Former Anchorage resident Howard Weaver today announced he is retiring as vice president for news at The McClatchy Co., the parent company of the Anchorage Daily News.

Weaver, 58, grew up in Anchorage and was the Daily News' top editor from 1983 to 1995, when he accepted a job offer with the parent company in Sacramento, Calif., the corporate headquarters.

In 2001, he was promoted to vice president for news, which involved overseeing the company's Washington, D.C., news bureau and spurring reporters and editors at McClatchy's 30 daily newspapers to embrace the opportunities the Internet provides.

Weaver's retirement is effective at the end of the year. He and his wife plan to remain in Sacramento, where, Weaver said, he intends "to think and try to write and go camp in the desert." They also hope to spend time in Alaska, he said.
