The boy's mother, 41-year-old Laura Sims, was treated and released at a hospital for minor injuries, while his 10-year-old sister, seated in the back on the far side of the impact, was uninjured, police spokeswoman Anita Shell said.
Police say Sims was traveling west on O'Malley, attempting to make a left turn to head south on the Seward through two lanes of oncoming traffic. The lane closest to her was stopped and she was inching out, Shell said, but when she pulled out, an approaching pickup in the farther lane driven by Edward Eugene Dillon Jr., 21, T-boned the car.
Nicholas was pinned inside the vehicle, and officials had to extricate him, Shell said. The surrounding section of road was closed for about three hours while rescuers worked the scene; it reopened at about 5 p.m., she said.
Shell said no citations have yet been issued.
Alcohol did not appear to be a factor, she said.
