According to police the first vehicle hit the moose shortly after 10 p.m.. No one was injured, though a passing Anchorage Fire Department ambulance did stop to check on occupants of the vehicle.

At one point, an SUV described by at least one witness as a maroon Suburban stopped and someone in the vehicle took several shots at the moose. The SUV then sped away before anyone could get a good description or a license plate number.

The shots failed to kill the moose and officers had to go out and dispatch it. The highway was closed for a few minutes during the incident.

Regardless of the circumstance, police said, it is illegal to discharge a firearm within city limits.
