Grocers recall peanut butter products

Fred Meyer and Safeway stores are recalling products that contain peanut butter.

Fred Meyer is recalling its Private Selection Peanut Butter Passion Ice Cream, sold in Alaska stores and elsewhere.

Safeway is recalling Eating Right Kids Apples With Peanut Butter and Celery With Peanut Butter, and Organic Bark Peanut Butter Cookies and Cream.

The peanut butter in the ice cream was supplied by Peanut Corp. of America and might be contaminated with salmonella, Fred Meyer said.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with this ice cream, the company said.

Here is Fred Meyer's description of the ice cream containers involved in the recall:

• Private Selection Peanut Butter Passion Ice Cream sold in 48-ounce containers with a "Sell by" date of 9-13-2009 under the following UPC Code Number: 0001111054437.

• Private Selection Peanut Butter Passion Ice Cream sold in 56-ounce containers with a "Sell by" date of 8-11-2009 under the following UPC Code Number: 0001111052816.

SAFEWAY

The Safeway products being recalled are:

• Eating Right Kids Apples With Peanut Butter -- 6.75-ounce three-pack unit with a "Use By" dates of 12/27/08 to 2/2/09 and UPC: 0-7983-70175-2.

• Eating Right Kids Celery With Peanut Butter -- 6.75-ounce three-pack unit with "Use By" dates of 12/27/09 to 2/2/09 and UPC: 0-79893-70172-1.

• Orchard Valley Harvest Item -- Organic Bark Peanut Butter Cookies and Cream. The product is sold only in "Nut Hut" kiosks in some U.S. stores.

No illnesses have been reported.

Consumers should discard these products or return them to their store for a refund. Consumers with questions should contact Safeway at 800-723-3929.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain.
