Cordova snowstorm

January Valdez snowstorm

Heavy snow pounded Valdez and Cordova on January 6, 2012, after the town received 19.2 inches Thursday from the Prince William Sound blizzard, making for a season total of more than 20 feet. Meanwhile, Nome is having its worst cold spell since 1989.

Mount Spurr is a volcano located about 80 miles west of Anchorage across Cook Inlet and last erupted two times (June and August) in the summer of 1992. During the August 1992 eruption, the ash cloud traveled 60,000 feet well into the stratosphere and winds carried it east and south across Anchorage and Turnagain Arm.
