Second payment OK'd in Exxon Valdez case

A federal judge has approved a second round of punitive damages payments to commercial fishermen and Native subsistence plaintiffs in the Exxon Valdez oil spill case. Lawyers overseeing a $383 million partial settlement from Exxon Mobil Corp. distributed $156 million in December.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge H. Russel Holland of Anchorage approved a second round of payments totaling $62.5 million to 5,331 claimants.

Many claimants, however, will receive only part or none of their shares of the money, as the IRS, state child-support agencies and others have holds on the payments to settle debts.

Court documents don't specify when the payments will be made.
