Schnuelle, a Whitehorse musher by way of Germany, spent 10 minutes at the Carmacks checkpoint before hitting the trail at 5:05 p.m. Alaska time.
Hugh Neff of Skagway was 33 minutes behind Schnuelle with a quick stop at the checkpoint.
Left behind was a group of mushers who spent several hours resting at Carmacks, including Kasilof's Jon Little, first to arrive in Carmacks at 11:47 a.m. Sunday. After a rest of six hours, Little left Carmacks at 5:51 p.m. Alaska time, 13 minutes behind Neff.
Three-time champion Hans Gatt of Whitehorse went through the checkpoint at 6:02 p.m. AST.
Into the Carmacks checkpoint behind Little were William Kleedehn of Whitehorse, who arrived at 11:12 a.m., and Martin Buser of Big Lake, who arrived at 11:20 a.m. They were all still at the checkpoint several hours later when Schnuelle put in his quick appearance.
Carmacks is about 175 miles into the 1,000-mile race from Whitehorse to Fairbanks. Twenty-nine mushers left the starting line in Whitehorse on Saturday morning.
Awaiting the leaders was a 40-mile run to the McCabe Creek dog-drop and a 35-mile run to Pelly Crossing. Yukon Quest officials estimated someone might reach McCabe Creek shortly before midnight on Sunday.
