Expect a late Tuesday night or, more likely, an early Wednesday morning finish to the 37th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Two years ago, Mackey left Shaktoolik, 220 miles from the finish line, about two hours earlier than he did on Monday morning, and arrived in Nome 8:08 p.m. Tuesday.
That year, he was in a tough homestretch battle with Jeff King of Denali Park. This year, he's cruising more than a checkpoint ahead of his rivals.
If he stays roughly two hours behind his 2007 pace, expect him in Nome about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. But lacking a challenge, Mackey may slow down.
Last year, Mackey arrived in Shaktoolik three hours earlier but left one hour later after resting. He made it to Nome at 2:46 a.m. Wednesday.
