The ADN asked candidates for Anchorage mayor their views on a variety of issues. We're printing their responses between now and the April 7 election.
Here is the question they are answering today: If money were not an issue, what would be your dream infrastructure project for Anchorage? Richard Wanda I prefer a project which will promote more business activities if I will be elected. Matt Claman A new building for the Department of Health and Human Services, which is long overdue. Eric Croft We live in the real world, where expense is important. The combination of the Fire Island Wind Farm and the Lake Chakachamna hydroelectric project would provide cheap renewable (energy) for our city for decades. These work even in the real world. Merica Hlatcu Did not respond to the questionnaire. Paul Honeman A better public transit system -- I wish I could have more than one project! This would include a light rail system from the Mat-Su Valley and eventually south to Rabbit Creek. Phil Isley A city by-pass route with International Airport and Raspberry roads connected to the Seward Highway and continuing to the mountain. Paul D. Kendall A world renown in line and in harmony in and around Cook Inlet areas; a hydrogen, ice, current, tidal, mass, thermal, DC transmission and storage hydroelectric research center with our residential sector being supplied by nearly free electricity and water (hydrogen) with large greenhouse structures for basic food supplies generation (potatoes, rice, wheat, tomatoes, other basic survival foods). Electric, air, water, and magnetic energy as vehicles like buses, autos, homes, food production in remote areas, etc. Jacob Seth Kern Buying parts for my machines. Dominic S.F. Lee My dream infrastructure project would be to build a causeway between Anchorage and North Kenai that would shorten driving time by three hours, save an average of 25 gallons of gas per round trip, and provide the infrastructure for a tidal power project that would provide cheap electricity for the Railbelt and new industries in the area. Bob "Joker" Lupo I'd like to see a monorail transportation system throughout the municipality, ultimately extending north to Wasilla, and south along the Seward Highway. This system would run on electric power, so air quality would be enhanced, when compared to diesel or gasoline usage. Walt Monegan Development of our downtown core area, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth avenues east of C Street to Gambell. Once built, connections with sky bridges that would allow pedestrians to traverse our downtown area warm and safe, such as in downtown Minneapolis. Billy Ray Powers World events, think tank of the world, place to go for inventors to get free patents and help with marketing inventions, etc. Tax relief, educational opportunities, semi-social health care for all citizens; not free, but affordable. Sheila Selkregg I'm torn. I'd either build a new transit center and efficient transit system that serves the core as well as Chugiak and Eagle River. Equally important is a new downtown City Hall. Our municipal departments are spread all over town, and many are in leased buildings. Larry Shooshanian Did not respond to the questionnaire. Dan Sullivan Anchorage needs to build an east-west bypass that would allow traffic to cross town without stoplights, similar to how the Minnesota bypass allows north/south traffic to efficiently traverse the city.
