ST. MARYS, Ga. -- The USS Alaska will be based at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Georgia next month after returning to duty following two years in a Norfolk, Va., shipyard. The Trident nuclear sub will not return to Bangor Naval Submarine Base in Washington, the only home port it had since being commissioned in 1986.

A Kings Bay spokeswoman, Lt. Rebecca Rebarich, said submarine arrivals are classified, and she cannot give the date when the 560-foot nuclear submarine will arrive.

On paper, eight Ohio-class submarines are ported at Kings Bay. But one, the USS Tennessee, is now in the Norfolk shipyards undergoing a similar refitting.

The Camden County Chamber of Commerce estimates that 1,000 sailors and family members move to St. Marys with each Ohio-class submarine at Kings Bay.
