Tchaikovsky's Big One

Juliana Osinchuk will supply solo honors when the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra performs Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto at 8 p.m. Saturday in Atwood Concert Hall. Given Osinchuk's previous appearances with the ASO in works by Liszt and Rachmaninoff we're putting this concert at the top of our weekend must-do list. Guest conductor Robert Moody will lead the concert, which includes Handel's "Water Music" and Hindemith's "Symphonic Metamorphosis."

Note that the ASO will be accepting non-perishable, commercially prepared and packaged food donations from patrons as part of a food drive for Food Bank of Alaska. It's part of the national Orchestras Feeding America program.

Taking the long view

2009 is the 50th anniversary of Alaska statehood. But 50 years is a blip in the 10,000- year history of people wandering through, settling down and coming to grips with the place. Storyteller Jack Dalton and performance artist Allison Warden collaborate on "Time Immemorial," the next play in Cyrano's series of locally written Alaskana, opening tonight for a three-week run at 413 D St. The production is directed by film-maker/actress/author Princess Lucaj -- that's her name, not her job title -- of Gwich'in descent and Israeli birth, whose award- winning short films have earned her a slot at Sundance, among other accolades. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday-Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $16 at centertix.net.

Creepy mystery

"Dial 'M' for Murder" debuted on television in 1952 but went immediately to the stage, where it became a permanent part of theater repertoire. Alfred Hitchcock's film version, with Grace Kelly, is ranked among his masterpieces. The script is a lot more complicated and nail-biting than the synopsis: Man blackmails a contract killer to murder his wife. (Cary Grant wanted the role, but the studio said he was too sweet and went with creepy Ray Milland instead.) The one-set play is perfect for Anchorage Community Theatre's intimate, if hard to find, studio theater, 1133 E. 70th Ave, where it will run through May 10. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Call 868-4913 for reservations or do it online at www.actalaska.org.
