Railroad releases financial report

The state-owned Alaska Railroad Corp. posted a $12.6 million profit last year, down 23 percent from the year before, according to the agency's annual report. Revenue reached $180 million, up 7 percent. Freight revenue totaled $96.3 million, up 5 percent. The key freight is petroleum products from the Flint Hills oil refinery in North Pole that is shipped to Anchorage.

Passenger revenue totaled $24.6 million, also up 5 percent. Grant revenue grew 12 percent to $37 million. Profits from the railroad's real estate topped $10.4 million last year, up 56 percent from a year earlier.

In all, the railroad carried 542,167 passengers last year, down 3 percent. Of that total, 168,836 passengers rode on Alaska Railroad cars while 373,331 road aboard tourism company cars the railroad pulled.
