The Associated Press via Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facility Cleanup crews remove rock and debris April 21, 2009, to mitigate additional slides on Portage Glacier Highway near Girdwood. A rock slide April 11 left a 300-foot pile of rubble as high as 30 feet on the road blocking vehicle travel to and from Whittier. State DOT officials are worried about a large rock slab at the top of the slide area, and the road will remain closed until the threat is addressed.
