Train service to start in Portage because of avalanche danger

WHITTIER -- The Alaska Railroad has ended its Anchorage-Whittier train service while the road to Whittier is closed due to a rock slide. The railroad said it instead is running twice-daily trains between Portage and Whittier. The Anchorage run was canceled due to avalanche conditions, the Alaska Railroad Corp. said.

The railroad has added complimentary bus service to Portage from the depot at 411 First Ave. in Anchorage. The Anchorage-Portage bus service and Portage-Whittier train schedule is as follows:

• Morning bus -- leaves Anchorage at 9:30 a.m. and arrives in Portage at 10:45 a.m. Bus leaves Portage at 11:15 a.m. and arrives in Anchorage at 12:30 p.m.

• Morning train -- leaves Whittier at 9 a.m. and arrives in Portage at 10. Train leaves Portage at 11 a.m. and arrives in Whittier at noon.

• Afternoon bus -- leaves Anchorage at 2:30 p.m. and arrives in Portage at 3:45 p.m. Bus leaves Portage at 4:15 p.m. and arrives in Anchorage at 5:30 p.m.

• Afternoon train -- leaves Whittier at 2 p.m. and arrives in Portage at 3 p.m. Leaves Portage at 4 p.m. and arrives in Whittier at 5 p.m.

This service is expected to continue at least through Saturday, the railroad said.
