A 22-month-old boy was hit and killed Monday by a taxicab as it pulled away from his home, according to Nome police.

The child, identified as Christopher George Johnson-Ozenna, was struck in front of his home at about noon Monday, according to police. Johnson-Ozenna was transported to Norton Sound Regional Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The cab, a 2008 Ford van operated by Nome Checker Cab, had just dropped off the boy and his father in front of their home and was waiting while the father unloaded belongings from the back of the vehicle, police said.

Meanwhile, Johnson-Ozenna wandered in front of the vehicle and, when his father shut the door, the driver, David D. Evans, 31, pulled forward and struck the boy, police said.

Evans and Johnson-Ozenna's father drove him to the hospital, police said.

The driver has not been charged. Officials said the investigation into the incident is continuing.
