Rest in peace
The "German Requiem" of Johannes Brahms wraps up the Anchorage Symphony's season at 8 p.m. Saturday night. The orchestra will be joined on the Atwood Concert Hall stage by the Anchorage Concert Chorus, the Alaska Chamber Singers and visiting solo vocalists for what many choristers tell me is their very favorite piece of music. Also on the program, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's cheerful "Linz" Symphony. Tickets are available at centertix.net.

Food and lust
The Arctic Siren's popular First Friday Cabaret will be a fundraiser for the Food Bank of Alaska -- an "exploration of love and the culinary arts." Tunes that some of Anchorage's best singers plan to belt out include "The Kitchen Song," "Peel Me a Grape," "Black Coffee" and more.
The Kevin Barnett Trio provides the backup and the Snow Goose provides a full menu and bar. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 tonight at the Snow Goose Theater. Tickets are $20 and may be reserved by calling 245-7311. Otherwise, get them in advance at the Snow Goose or at the door.

Claws on ivory
A New York critic compared pianist Regina Yeh to a tigress following her performance there. The Taiwanese-born virtuoso, now chair of the Piano Studies department at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., will perform in Anchorage at 7:30 tonight in the UAA Arts Building Recital Hall. Yeh will play two late Beethoven sonatas, Chopin mazurkas and the Feruccio Busoni's massive transcription of Bach's Fantasy and Fugue in A minor. A lot of music for just $15 (no credit cards).
Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, she'll be judging the Alaska Piano Competition, also taking place in the Recital Hall. All sessions are open to the public and free, including the winners' recital at 7 p.m. Sunday.
