WATCHING OUT FOR GREEN CRABS (Deckboss): With spring weather, experts from natural resource agencies, professors, teachers, students and citizens in Alaska are increasing their vigilance for oceanic aliens: European green crabs. Includes photo

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE UNALASKA POLICE BLOTTER ... (Unalaska Advertiser): "Trespass - Vessel captain requested assistance removing a crewman, who had been fired after he bragged about stealing property from the last vessel on which he had worked. An officer issued a trespass advisement to the man and stood by while he removed belongings, allegedly his own, from the boat. Burglary - Samuel A. Wisner, 32, of Adak, was arrested for Burglary II and Theft II after an officer determined he was in possession of numerous items, including a flat screen TV, a DVD player, a welder and numerous tools, which had been stolen from the last vessel on which he had been employed."

TALKEETNA RESIDENTS WITHOUT RUNNING WATER FACE DILEMMA (KTNA): Things might get a little rank in downtown Talkeetna this month. The owner of Talkeetna Roadhouse has had to tell local residents that her shower service is ending. With tourists and climbers showing up, the roadhouse can't serve residents who don't have shower and laundry facilities of their own. The situation should ease in June as other facilities become available.

FOREST FAIR MAY BE BYOB THIS YEAR (Anchorage Press): If organizers of the Girdwood Forest Fair get their way, liquor stores in the area will have to close shop by 6 p.m. each day during the fair (scheduled for Independence Day weekend this year). New security plans for the Forest Fair this year also include patrols by private security officers, according to the sponsors' Facebook page.

TWEETS FROM A FAKE DON YOUNG (Conservatives4Palin): As Gov. Palin opened her Twitter account this week, someone pretending to be Rep. Don Young was also tweeting. A Palin-following blog got hold of the fake Young posts before the account was suspended. Sample: "Sarah Palin are you on Twitter? I'm in DC right now. Is it cold back home?"

SHOOTING RANGE PLAN DRAWS FIRE FROM BUTTE RESIDENTS (Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman): An attempt by the state to concentrate target shooting in a couple of safe areas is running into objections from residents of the Butte. Includes photos

DOG VIDEO: ANDRE RUNS ON PROSTHETICS (Ohmidog.com): Andre, the dog that chewed off two feet to escape a leg-hold trap in Mat-Su, was equipped with two prosthetic limbs this week in Denver. New video shows how quickly he has mastered them.

PREPARING FOR TSUNAMIS: NEW MAPPING TECHNOLOGY PLOTS INUNDATION PATHS, ESCAPE ROUTES (Popular Science): Boosted by technological advances in computing power, tsunami modeling, GIS and NOAA's DART reporting network, researchers are creating a new set of tsunami inundation maps for coastal California. The 1964 Alaska earthquake spawned a tsunami that killed about a dozen people in Crescent City, Calif. Includes historical photos

TV SERIES IN INUPIAQ FOCUSES ON HEALTH (Arctic Sounder): Three Alaska community health projects will be showcased in an international broadcast of the Canadian series "Qanuqtuurniq - Finding the Balance," airing on May 11, 12 and 13. Alaskans can tune in to the 360 North channel. Produced by the National Aboriginal Health Organization in Canada, the live, phone-in series on Inuit wellness will be broadcast in Alaska, Canada, Greenland and online as part of the International Polar Year. See a trailer here.

SALCHA MAN TRAINS CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTORS AND HORSES (Fairbanks Daily News-Miner): After months of planning, Fairbank-area Civil War re-enactors have scheduled their first-ever weekend encampment for mid-May. Activities will include drills, live firing and an authentic campsite with people in Confederate and Union uniforms and period costumes representing farriers, tinsmiths, sutlers, doctors, nurses and preachers. Includes photos
