• Anchorage Garden Club monthly meeting, 7 p.m. today at the Pioneer School House basement, corner of Third Avenue and Eagle Street. John Cobb will talk about "The Benefits of a Water Garden or Pond." Call the AGC hotline for program information, 566-0539. • The 2009 Society of American Foresters Spring Tree Seedling Sale, 9 a.m. May 9, in the parking lot at Northern Lights Boulevard and Spenard Road, near REI. Seedlings of lodgepole pine, Siberian larch, Colorado blue spruce, paper birch and white spruce are available in quantities of 20 for $20. • The Fabulous Lobelia Basket Workshop: 10 a.m. -- noon, May 9. The $50 cost includes all materials, construction aids and instruction. Pre-registration is required. Instructed by Debbie Hinchey. • The Alaska Master Gardeners Spring Workshop with keynote speaker, Rose Marie Nichols McGee. May 9 at the Gateway Education Building at the Alaska Zoo on O'Malley Rd. Among the classes offered are: Maintaining Your Garden Tools, Garden Design and Layout, Proper Selection, Placement and Planting of a Tree and Build Your Own Wooden Garden Trellis. • Spring Cleanup Week at the Alaska Botanical Garden, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. May 12-16, Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm. Bring your gloves and wear good shoes and help clean-up the garden beds at the ABG. Call 770-3692, or call your garden club for more info.

• Alaska's 50th anniversary of statehood tree planting: Plant a tree between May 15 and July 15, 2009 and register it with the Community Forestry Program. See forestry.alaska.gov/community/.
