Their agreement also calls for construction of a railroad spur to access the site. The gravel will be shipped by train to a South Anchorage operation run by Central Paving Products, Eklutna said.
"We need to clear the site and flatten the ground in preparation for a major industrial park with rail access," said Curtis J. McQueen, Eklutna's chief executive.
The project will open up fresh industrial land in Anchorage. A recent assessment of the city's industrial land base concluded the amount of land designated for industrial use in Anchorage is inadequate to accommodate normal growth expected over the next 20 years.
