The male corpse was discovered in a tent in a homeless camp near the jail, by the intersection of Third Avenue and Orca Street, police said. Someone came across the body about 2 p.m. and flagged an officer down, police said.
Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz, supervisor of the homicide unit, said no foul play is suspected and that the state medical examiner took the body to determine the cause of death.
Police, who were working to identify the man and to notify his family, did not immediately name him.
Lt. Dave Parker said it was not known how long the man had been in the tent or whether the camp site was his own.
Both bodies found over the last few days turned up in or near homeless camps.
"It was kind of amazing to me to see this many this quickly," Parker said. "But in the last couple weeks, we've had several (deaths) in residences, so it's just, people die."
Police identified the first body as that of Anchorage resident Stanley Ivey. He was found Thursday afternoon in the Chester Creek greenbelt, about 200 yards east of the Seward Highway, near its intersection with E. 20th Avenue.
A volunteer helping the annual Anchorage Chamber of Commerce's Citywide Cleanup this past weekend found Ivey, 57, in a wooded area near a set of homeless camps by Sullivan Arena.
An examination by the state medical examiner revealed no signs of homicide, but the exact cause of death had yet to be determined, Parker said. Ivey's family has been notified.
