The 2007 Red X north coast blend represents a crossroads of fantastic fruit selection, superb wine-making skill, and eco-friendly production. Reed Renaudin is the mastermind behind X Winery. His vineyard selections are very, very creditable; Spring Mountain, Truchard, Sangiacomo, Nova, Shannon Ridge and Roach. Tasty wine is all about the fruit -- as the French have been trying telling us for years. The winery's Red X is a blend of 60 percent syrah, 21 percent cabernet sauvignon and 19 percent zinfandel. Add 16 months in oak, 14.5 percent alcohol by volume and you've got good nuts and bolts. The wine is dark and carries black fruit aromatics with licorice. The mouth is surprisingly deep and tannic. Pure black sweet fruits grace the mid pallet, yielding to sturdy structure and length. Overall a very satisfying drop, immediately serve with your favorite grilled dish. Costs about $18.
