McGuire to address energy forum
The Alaska Federation of Business and Professional Women host a forum on energy at 2 p.m. Saturday at the BP Energy Center, 900 E. Benson Blvd. The hearings are designed to help lawmakers craft a comprehensive statewide energy plan. GCI shareholders to meet June 29
Alaska telecom company GCI has scheduled its annual shareholders meeting for 6 p.m. June 29 at the Alaska/Denali Ballroom of the Hilton Anchorage Hotel, 500 W. Third Ave. Four directors will be elected and a proposal to amend the company's stock option plan will be put before shareholders.
The Anchorage company's services include local, long-distance and wireless phones, cable TV and Internet connections. Last year its revenue grew 11 percent to $575 million but it reported a $1.9 million loss, compared with a $13.7 million profit in 2007, according to its financial statements.
Dog Wash Resort relocates
The Dog Wash Resort has recently moved to 1000 W. 66th Court, Unit B, in Anchorage from their Old Seward Highway location. The business offers bathing, grooming for both dogs and cats, doggie day-camp and overnight boarding. The manager lives on site and all staff are certified by the American Boarding and Kennel Association. Lynden wins safe-trucking award
Lynden Transport Inc. was named winner of the Conoco Phillips/Alaska Trucking Association, "Alaska Safe Truck Fleet Award" for 2009. The award is given for several criteria including the number of preventable accidents compared to the number of miles operated in Alaska as well as the number of company employees participating in Alaska Trucking Association safety programs, according to Aves Thompson, executive director of the Alaska Trucking Association. The award is made annually at the Alaska Trucking Association annual meeting.
Boateam opens in Thorne Bay
Boateam International Marine Surveyors and Systems Consultants has opened an office in Thorne Bay in Southeast Alaska. The company provides a full range of marine services to vessel owners and underwriters. Boateam said it provides C&V and prepurchase surveys for commercial and recreational vessels, as well as damage surveys and claims assistance for underwriters and vessel owners. TOTE receives safety certification
Totem Ocean Trailer Express Inc. has received its Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series 18001:2007 certification for its safety standards. The certification means that the shipping company has a health and safety management system designed to prevent injuries; identify hazards and risks and have systems to reduce or eliminate them; training programs and other safety-oriented programs, the company said.
Among its programs, TOTE provides a safety orientation for all employees and new employees. Safety committees at each location meet monthly to identify hazards and recommend controls. Each scheduled business meeting begins with a "safety minute" to review emergency procedures and to discuss a topic of the week. Each contractor who works on a TOTE ship gets a brochure on safety and environmental guidelines, the company said.
The certification was made by Det Norske Veritas of Houston, Texas, after seven months of intensive work by TOTE, the company said. TOTE is a major cargo carrier running ships between Tacoma and Anchorage.
Nerland Agency recognized
Nerland Agency Worldwide Partners of Anchorage recently received a 2009 Silver Anvil Award of Excellence by the Public Relations Society of America.
