Fire Department rescues injured woman from Flattop

The Anchorage Fire Department rescued a 21-year-old Anchorage woman who fell and hurt her ankle near the top of Flattop Mountain on Sunday evening. On a hike with her family, the woman slipped, either twisting or breaking her ankle about 100 feet from the Flattop peak, said Anchorage Fire Division Chief Bridget Bushue.

Someone called in the accident at about 5:30 p.m. and the fire department sent two backcountry rescue teams and a LifeMed Alaska helicopter to the mountain, Bushue said.

By about 7:30 p.m., the rescuers had strapped the woman to a litter and were attempting to land the helicopter on top of Flattop to get her to a local hospital, Bushue said.
