Witnesses reported seeing an orange and red parachute descending the Mount Baldy off Fire Creek Trail just before 3:30 p.m., when about halfway down the chute folded in on itself, causing the person to plunge to the ground, police said.

But rescue personnel searching by land and air could not find any sign of the person and didn't even have a firm location to begin searching, police Lt. Dave Parker said.

The person may have been fine and able to walk away, he said.

"Certainly if someone is missing a parachutist we'd like to know about it," Parker said.
