Fairbanks Grizzlies beat Wild 64-44 to grab playoff spot

Fairbanks' 64-44 victory over the winless Alaska Wild on Saturday secured the Grizzlies their first home playoff game in the team's two-year history. Last year, the Grizzlies, then coached by former National Football League quarterback John Fourcade, compiled a 3-11 record in the Intense Football League. The Intense League merged last fall with the United Indoor Football League to form the Indoor Football League.

While the Grizzlies have doubled their wins from last season, they also extended their season. No date has been set for the playoff game, but it will occur after Fairbanks' regular-season finale against the Wild in Anchorage on July 9.

Quarterback Earl Mason (6 for 21 with 83 yards and two interceptions) threw four touchdowns for the Wild (0-13). Three of his scoring strikes went to Solomon Jones and the other to Victor Smith.

Demarcus James returned a kickoff 48 yards in the second half for the Wild, who had leads of 8-0 and 14-8 and tied the game 20-20 with Mason's 20-yard pass to Jones with 1:23 left in the first half before the Grizzlies rallied.

"It's been a tough season for us, but as a team, we had to come together," James said. "We can't give up, we've got to keep fighting."
