State lands $61 million for improvements at 5 airports

JUNEAU -- The state Transportation Department's aviation division has executed grants of federal stimulus money for improvements at five airports.

The total is nearly $61 million for projects at Ouzinkie, Fort Yukon, King Salmon, Akiachak and Allakaket.

Ouzinkie will get a new runway, taxiway, airport lights, snow removal equipment building and two miles of access road.

Improvements at Fort Yukon include resurfacing the runway and taxiway and replacing lighting systems.

The King Salmon airport received a grant to resurface terminal aprons and taxiways.

Grants also will pay for the first phase of work to relocate Akiachak airport and for improvements to the Allakaket airport.

Alaska owns and operates 256 rural airports.
