David Hullstine, 57, of South Thorne Bay was driving near the intersection of Kasaan Road and Goose Creek about 4 p.m. Monday when the "dashboard became engulfed in flames," troopers said. It was not immediately clear why the fire broke out.

Hullstine escaped with minor injuries, troopers said.

The Thorne Bay Fire Department put the fire out but the van was a total loss, troopers said.
