Travis Smallwood, 34, was hospitalized and underwent an operation in which surgeons were apparently able to stop the bleeding, police said. He was expected to survive.
Police were still hunting for the assailants this afternoon. The two masked men kicked in the door of an apartment in the 1100 block of Karluk Street about 9:10 a.m. and started shooting, police spokeswoman Anita Shell said.
They fled the residence apparently without taking anything, she said. Police found a small, six-plant marijuana growing operation inside.
The shooting came on the heels of a similar incident in the same building on June 28, she said. In that case, two men kicked in the door of an apartment on the opposite end of the building, then told a woman inside they had the wrong home and left, Shell said. One of them snatched a cell phone, but no one was injured, she said.
The men then fled the home and sped off in a bright, "fire-engine red" Jeep Cherokee or similar vehicle, she said.
Police suspect the incidents may be related. The men were described as white men in their 30s, both about 6 feet tall and with husky builds. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call police at 786-8900.
